How To Be A Man After God’s Heart

“And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’” (Act 13:22).

David stand out as a very special character in the Bible. He occupied a very special place in God’s heart. God was ready to give David anything. He even said would have given David more and more wives if he ask Him. We know that God only wants one wife for one man but He was ready to go the extra mile for David. He made an everlasting covenant with David and align David with Himself. The Son of God became the son of David — Jesus was called the son of David.

God gave David access to things… even things that were meant for only the New Testament people. David was an Old Testament man that lived in the New Testament reality. Paul described David as one who has tasted the reality of the New Testament:

“But people are declared righteous because of their faith, not because of their work. King David spoke of this, describing the happiness of an undeserving sinner who is declared to be righteous: “Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are put out of sight. Yes, what joy for those whose sin is no longer counted against them by the Lord.” (Rom 4:5-8).

Despite his mistakes God loved him and he was so dear to God’s heart. What made David so special? Why did God love and favoured David despite his imperfections? What did David do that made him so dear to God? And how can you enter into this level of favour with God? Below are very helpful points that would answer the question in your heart.

1) Exalt God Above All Other

David was one who has put God first in his life. God was more important to him than any other as such he always saw God in everything. He entered the camp and he didn’t see a giant taunting the Israelites. He saw an uncircumcised Philistine taunting the Almighty God. He sees God in every situation because he has exalted God above all situations.

When he did something evil he exclaimed that he had done this evil against God. Not against uzia who he murdered, not against the people he was enthroned to protect and not against Besheba who he defied with that sinful act. But to him it was against God and God alone, God is all that matters. Paul teaches that the servants should serve as if they are serving God and not man. If you exalt God above all you would see God in all and do all as to God.

2) Completely Trust And Rely On God

David trust and rely completely on God. As a boy he attacked beast because he knew he a child a covenant where God promised to put fear — fear of the covenant people — in the heart of all other both man and animal. So David knew that these beasts were afraid of him as a member of the covenant and as a result he could chase them around and even slay them.

God promised to give David the throne and David never raised a finger to get this throne by his power. But he waited patiently for God even when opportunity came to slay Saul and take the throne. He knew God who has promised will take him there. Many a times we feel like we have to do something to make God promises come to pass but all we have to do is trust and rely on Him. Just focus on walking with Him and He would surely take you there even if it delay.

3) Pursue God With All Of Your Being

The longest chapter in the Bible is Psalm 109 and it is all about a desire and a love for the law and the word of God. David was so in love with the word of God, he desperately wants to follow God. David was passionately pursuing God; spending time in His presence, desiring to hear from Him and follow Him.

David was a man with a deep hunger and a sincere love for God. All other obeyed the law because they fear the punishment and because it is a tradition, their identity as a people. But David obeyed because he is in love with this God and this God has become his pleasure.

If God could see these qualities in you He would surely pull you close to His heart. You would become so attractive to Him that He can resist but to bless you with all your heart desires and even more.
